Codyre's slice of heaven leads Scarborough MCC to Premiership

Scott Codyre has produced on the performances of his lifetime to lead Scarborough MCC to their first 1st Grade Premiership in the PCA Competition.

Fighting injury problems that has plagued him all year, the gusty Kiwi scored 75 to ensure Scarborough reached a defendable total of 196.

Shane Edwards chipped in with a valuable 36 at the top of the order and Jason Jeffery steadied the ship with a solid 31 to help stablise the innings and take the score with Codyre from 4-63 to 5-161, a valuable 98 run partnership.

With the two at the crease a score over 200 was looking promising until a late collapse saw Leederville get back in the game by restricting the Scarborough to 196.

Jack Joy was still standing at the end with a hard fought 21, while Florance ( 2 ), Hutchinson ( 2 ), Templeton ( 2 ) and Ward ( 1 ) all failed to get starts.

After setting a respectable score Scarborough were keen to get early inroads into a strong Leederville batting line up, and it was Sam Ward who got the breakthrough, getting Cohen caught by Mark Steven.

With Leederville cruising at 1-57, Captain Florance brought on Codyre, which turned out to be a winning move, with Codyre taking the next 4 wickets to have the home side reeling at 5-114.

Codyre snapped up Woods ( 10 ), McInerney ( 24 ), Smith ( 18 ), and Hughes ( 25 ) in a spell which changed the game.

However Codyre was left in pain after his second wicket after an over zealous Fraser lept on Codyre which resulted in Codyre spraining his ankle and had to come off to medical treatment. He returned minutes later after some expert strapping by coach Barry Davis.

It was then Templeton who chipped in with the valuable wicket of Hardy for 15. Codyre got his 5th when Cornish spectacularly caught Evans on the boundary for 2.

Then came the first of 2 run-outs, with Monrawila falling just short of his ground, leaving the home side 8-153. Houston was next to fall with Mark Steven getting another catch off Codyre.

With Leederville edging closer, their last wicket partnership taking them from 157 to 180 before Kirkwood hitting a ball to Jason Jeffery at Mid on, going to a single, and Jason mis-fielding the ball, the batters decided to go for a second run, and Jeffery quickly re-gathering the ball and firing it in to Codyre at the bowlers end who whips off the bails win the premiership for Scarborough Mercantile Cricket Club.
